New Registration & Taxes
As of 2026, the Swiss vehicle registration process has shifted heavily towards digital solutions, while tax breaks for electric vehicles remain a thing of the past.
Administrative hurdles for car buyers are shrinking, but costs for EV owners are solidifying. The key change this year is the full integration of the Electronic Certificate of Conformity (eCoC). This digital-first approach means that when you buy a new car, the technical data is transmitted directly from the importer to the cantonal vehicle authority (SAN/OCV), eliminating the need for physical "grey papers" during the initial phase.

On the financial side, the 4% import tax on electric vehicles (re-introduced in 2024) remains fully active. Buyers importing an EV into Switzerland in 2026 must account for this duty, as federal exemptions have not been renewed.
